Friends of The Petaluma is proud to administer comprehensive merit-based scholarship and recognition programs that honor academic excellence, community service, and leadership among students in our community. Since 2020, Friends of The Petaluma has distributed over $450,000 in merit-based awards to 180 deserving students, helping them pursue their educational dreams and build brighter futures. Our Flagship Scholarship Programs
Friends of The Petaluma offers three primary scholarship programs designed to recognize and reward different aspects of student achievement. Each program has been carefully structured to support students who demonstrate exceptional qualities in academics, leadership, and perseverance.
Petaluma Excellence Scholarship
$5,000 Annually
Our premier scholarship program recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement throughout their high school careers. This award celebrates those who have maintained exceptional grade point averages while challenging themselves with rigorous coursework.
Recipients of the Petaluma Excellence Scholarship typically have GPAs of 3.8 or higher, have taken multiple Advanced Placement or honors courses, and have shown consistent dedication to their studies. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, provided students maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA in college.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale
- Completion of at least four AP or honors courses
- Enrollment in an accredited four-year college or university
- Demonstration of academic passion through essays and recommendations
- Residency in Petaluma or surrounding communities
Community Leadership Award
$2,500
The Community Leadership Award honors students who have made significant contributions to their communities through volunteer work, civic engagement, and leadership initiatives. This scholarship recognizes that true excellence extends beyond the classroom and into the community.
Ideal candidates have logged substantial volunteer hours, initiated or led community service projects, demonstrated leadership in school or community organizations, and shown a genuine commitment to making their community a better place. We seek students who inspire others and create positive change.
Past recipients have founded food drives, organized environmental cleanup initiatives, mentored younger students, advocated for social causes, and led fundraising campaigns for local nonprofits. Their impact extends far beyond their individual achievements, creating ripple effects that benefit entire communities.
First-Generation College Student Grant
$3,000
We recognize that first-generation college students face unique challenges and barriers in pursuing higher education. This grant specifically supports students who will be the first in their immediate family to attend college, helping to break down financial obstacles and celebrate their pioneering spirit.
Recipients of this grant demonstrate academic potential, determination to succeed despite challenges, and a clear vision for how higher education will transform their lives and communities. We look for students who show resilience, resourcefulness, and a strong commitment to their educational goals.
Beyond financial support, grant recipients gain access to our mentorship network, which connects them with professionals and previous scholarship recipients who can provide guidance throughout their college journey. Application Timeline and Process
We've designed our application process to be straightforward and accessible while gathering the information needed to make informed selection decisions. Our timeline is consistent each year, allowing students and families to plan ahead.
Annual Scholarship Calendar
Applications Open
Online application portal becomes available. Students can begin submitting materials and requesting recommendation letters.
Information Sessions
Virtual and in-person sessions held at local high schools to answer questions and provide application guidance.
Application Deadline
All application materials must be submitted by 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Late applications cannot be considered.
Review Period
Selection committees review applications, conduct interviews with finalists, and make award decisions.
Awards Announced
Recipients are notified via email and phone. Public announcement made through local media and school districts.
Awards Ceremony
Formal recognition event celebrating all scholarship recipients. Families, donors, and community members invited.
Fund Disbursement
Scholarship funds sent directly to recipients' colleges and universities for fall semester tuition and expenses.
Application Requirements
While specific requirements vary by scholarship program, most applications include the following components:
Personal Statement
Essay addressing specific prompts about educational goals, challenges overcome, and future aspirations (500-750 words)
Academic Transcripts
Official or unofficial transcripts showing all high school coursework and grades through the most recent completed semester
Recommendation Letters
Two letters from teachers, counselors, or community leaders who can speak to academic abilities and character
Activities Resume
Comprehensive list of extracurricular activities, volunteer work, employment, awards, and leadership positions
College Acceptance
Proof of acceptance to an accredited college or university (can be submitted after application if not yet received)
Financial Information
Optional financial aid information (required only for need-based components of certain scholarships)
Our Transparent Selection Process
Transparency and fairness are fundamental to our scholarship selection process. We've established rigorous procedures to ensure that every application receives thorough, unbiased consideration and that selection decisions are based solely on merit and established criteria.
Selection Committee Composition
Each scholarship program has a dedicated selection committee composed of educators, community leaders, previous scholarship recipients, and subject matter experts. Committee members receive training on bias recognition and fair evaluation practices. No committee member may review applications from students with whom they have personal relationships.

Initial Screening
Applications are reviewed for completeness and eligibility. Incomplete applications are flagged, and applicants are given opportunity to submit missing materials before deadline.
Blind Review
Personal identifying information is removed from applications. Each application receives independent review from at least three committee members using standardized rubrics.
Scoring Compilation
Individual scores are compiled and averaged. Applications with highest scores advance to finalist round. Significant score discrepancies trigger additional review.
Finalist Interviews
Top candidates participate in structured interviews with committee members. Interviews assess communication skills, passion for education, and alignment with scholarship values.
Final Selection
Committee convenes to discuss finalists and make final award decisions. Decisions are based on comprehensive evaluation of all application components and interview performance.
